Supported Child Development Program

The Supported Child Development Program (SCDP) is a community-based program that assists families of children with extra support needs to access inclusive child care programs of their choice. The program serves children from birth up to their 13th birthday.

SCDP provides:

  • Assistance to families to find child care programs that best meet the child and family’s need
  • Individual planning to promote each child’s development
  • Training and support for parents and child care providers
  • Resources such as books, toys, and specialized equipment
  • Referrals to other services such as therapists or specialists
  • Where necessary, additional staff to ensure that children may participate fully with their peers.

The SCDP operates under the principles of inclusion and family centred practice. Parents may self-refer, or with parent consent, referrals may come from other service providers. The service is voluntary and free of charge.

Approximately 6000 children per year access SCDP services across the province. The program is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
